Saturday's opening was a very festive start indeed to our two latest exhibitions Rae Richards' Overtime and Paul Munro's Afterwork. We celebrated Rae's ninetieth year with cake and champagne as well as Paul's extraordinary extracurricular artistic career and his generous gift to the university. The exhibitions continue until 7 October and there are still some outstanding works available for sale.
Overtime marks 60 years for Richards as a painter in this city. Arriving in 1957 with her young family and attending the local branch of the National Art School, she has become an enduring presence in the Newcastle art scene. In recent years she has taken a different approach to her painting. Continuing to probe techniques and ideas, her works move gently from the explorations and subjects of previous years, towards more reduced and dreamlike studies of colour and light.
