The University Gallery is offering up an array of special free events for the University's 2018 Open Day, including basket weaving, guided tours and music performances by local vocalist Georgie Jones. See below for all the details and we will see you there!

OPEN DAY at the University Gallery
SATURDAY 25 AUGUST

SPECIAL EVENTS:

Basket weaving with Aunty Tracey Coombes
at the University Gallery, Callaghan Campus
11–11:30am: weaving demonstration
11:30–2pm: drop-in basket making workshop

Discover the ancient craft of basket weaving with Kamilaroi artist Aunty Tracey Coombes. Starting with a half-hour weaving demonstration at 11am, Aunty Tracey will guide you through the basics of basket coiling and discuss Indigenous weaving techniques and materials. Following the demonstration, make your own basket in an open, drop-in workshop until 2pm. During this event you can experience our current exhibition Painting the Song, which draws from the celebrated Aboriginal art collection of Deborah Sims and Matt Dickson.

Open Day Guided Tour
of the Visual Arts and Media Studies building, Fine Art workshops and University Gallery, finishing with Georgie Jones’ 1pm performance at the gallery:

Session Three – 12:15–1:00pm. Departing from the FEDUA precinct.

Georgie Jones performances
at the University Gallery, Callaghan Campus
1pm and 2:30pm

World-class Newcastle vocalist Georgie Jones will perform two sets at the University Gallery at 1pm and 2:30pm. Described as ethereal, delicate, raw and soulful, one reviewer recently observed of Jones: “…you’re about to experience something special when a naked voice can silence a room”. Jones will perform a mix of her own songs and interpretations of well-known covers. The performances will resonate with our current exhibition, Painting the Song,  which explores the relationship between Aboriginal Art and music.

These events are FREE, all welcome to attend.
